Book Review: Make Your Own by Javant Benton

Make Your Own by Javant Benton

YouTube cooking videos are my favorite to watch on my spare time. While looking for a healthy alternative to fried samosas, I found Javant Benton's Healthy Vegan Eating YouTube channel. I immediately tried his vegan baked Jamaican patties, which were delicious. Due to requests from subscribers, Benton published his cookbook this year which was a New York Times Best Seller.  If you like to cook healthy delicious food, whether you are vegan or not, Javant Benton's Make Your Own cookbook is worth it!.  Let's discuss....

Obesity, defined as having a body mass index of 30 or higher, is a major health crisis in the United States. According to the CDC, from 2017-March 2020, 41.9% of adults over 20 were obese; and being overweight or having obesity are associated with a higher risk of getting 13 types of cancer, including breast, colon and liver.  One way to lower the risk is to eat healthy foods, limit caloric intake, as well as exercise. But, what happens if you find it difficult to let go of fried, salty and sugary filled foods and beverages for healthier alternatives? One way is to find a good cookbook and make your own food!

Javant Benton's, Make Your Own cookbook is an excellent addition to your library. With over 120+ plant-based recipes, you are sure to find something delicious.  I like the fact that his recipes are simple, take a few minutes to make and are easy to follow. Even though I am a vegetarian, I still enjoy vegan recipes.  My favorite recipes are the veggie ground, Jamaican patties and the brownies. I look forward to trying new recipes.

Benton's 'Make Your Own' motto is catchy and true because anyone can follow the recipes and make their own delicious dishes at home. To eat healthier, Benton suggests updating traditional recipe ingredients with healthier alternatives. For example, instead of using white processed sugar in desserts, he advises using date sugar instead.  Benton does not use oil and advises using minimal salt.

Javant Benton's Healthy Vegan Eating YouTube channel has over 310 thousand subscribers.  His veggie ground video, which has over 1 million views, is one of my favorite dishes. If you are looking for an alternative to ground beef, the veggie ground recipe is a winner!

Veggie ground uses cauliflower, among other ingredients.

Delicious - Jamaican Patties. Instead of fried, these are baked. No oil.

A health scare caused Benton to change his relationship with food and seek out a healthier way of eating. After losing a relative to cancer, I reevaluated my relationship with food, as well. Javant Benton's Make Your Own cookbook is one of my favorite cookbooks.

Bon Appetit!
