There are several immensely entertaining movies streaming right now on Netflix as of December 2024. I have lost count of how many times I have watched these movies, but I notice something new each time I watch them. With each repeat viewing, I see nuances that spark new observations. Let's discuss....
Entertaining movies streaming right now on Netflix, as of December 2024:
Jaws
My Mother took my siblings and me to see Jaws. She passed away in July 2023, so now Jaws will always have a special place in my heart. Only recently do I truly understand the story. How does a police chief from New York, who is afraid of the water, figure out how to kill a great white shark? This movie is Steven Spielberg at his best. The Academy Award winning score by John Williams is epic.

Oblivion
Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper in this post-apocalyptic film. Vika, his partner, is love struck but Jack doesn't feel the same. As their project comes to an end on earth, Jack does not look forward to joining the others on Titan but Vika cannot wait. Any more details will ruin the story for you. The sets are beautiful, Cruise's performance is excellent, the music is outstanding, and the unrequited love sub-plot will break your heart.

Brian DePalma's Scarface, screenplay by Oliver Stone, is a masterpiece. The controversial film about Tony Montana, a Cuban Refugee, and his quest to be successful in the illegal drug trade is very well told. The cinematography is beautiful. I could just watch the movie with the volume turned down and still be entertained. It is a remake of the 1932 film with the same name, but his film is updated with a cool soundtrack, an exquisite performance by Al Pacino, pink pelicans and more. Even though Montana was a criminal, he refused to do one particular job which cost him his life. This movie does a great job of humanizing the villain that you feel sorry for him at the end. Watch the film to find out why.
A Jazz Man's Blues
A forbidden love is tested in this beautifully written and directed film by Tyler Perry. In 1987, Hattie Mae asks the Attorney General of Hopewell, Georgia, to look into the murder of her son Bayou who was lynched in 1947. She gives Johnathan a group of letters to read which would tell him all he needs to know to solve the mystery. What he discovers will change his life forever.
Rebel Ridge
What is civil asset forfeiture? Watch this entertaining film to find out. I love it when movies share knowledge about politics and law. From the opening scene to the ending credits, you will be entertained and rooting for the hero all the way. Who is the hero? That is up to you.

A Fall From Grace
Grace Waters thought she met, fell in love and married the perfect man. She was wined and dined by her lover until after the marriage. Then everything turned sour. The film is a cautionary warning especially to older women to be careful when dating. Not all glitter is gold. Waters was arrested and tried for killing her husband. Is she found guilty? Watch the film to find out.

Whitney-A documentary film
Whitney Elizabeth Houston's voice sounds like an angel. Her rise to fame and fall is a story of success and heartbreak. The documentary gives us an inside peek into the environment that gave birth to her career. Her mother, Cissy Houston, was Whitney's inspiration to pursue a singing career. Whitney's vocalizing of lyrics means you don't need a lyric sheet to understand what she is singing about. Houston makes you feel her songs because she sang from the heart. Her voice was just enough - she didn't over or under sing. However, not everyone was a fan. When Houston was booed at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1988, she was hurt. Even if you are not a fan of Ms. Houston, you will enjoy this documentary.

The Six Triple Eight
Tyle Perry's drama, The Six Triple Eight, about the only predominately Black all-female squad to serve in World War II is entertaining and educational. The performances are excellent and the writing is on point. Learn about the struggles of women of color and the obstacles they overcame to serve their country.
The Forge
A cute faith-based movie about a young man who benefits from a mentor and belief in religion. Isiah is raised by a single female mother. The beginning scene shows him watching video games and ignoring his mother's request. Find out how love and community turns him into a responsible young man.
