Inspirational Song Analysis: Early in the Morning by Charlie Wilson, Lonnie Simmons and Rudy Taylor

When Harlan Howard was asked to describe what makes good, honest music, especially in country and folk, he replied "three chords and the truth." This is also true for rhythm and blues, also known as R&B. Relatable music serenades your heart and mind: the heart feels the emotions and the mind interprets the message. Inspirational music encourages positive change. At a recent gathering, a DJ played "Early in the Morning" written by Charlie Wilson, Lonnie Simmons and Rudy Taylor, originally recorded by The Gap Band. Even though I had heard the song several times, this time I really listened to the lyrics and discovered a powerful message about acceptance, letting go and moving on. Let's discuss....

The Title:

The title, "Early in the Morning," is catchy and a story within itself.  Morning represents the dawning of a new day.  Each morning is another chance to make different choices for a better life experience. It also symbolizes 'waking up' to become aware of a new method of thinking and understanding.

Why get up early in the morning? According to the song, because the early bird catches the worm. In nature, earthworms move around at night when it is dark because sunlight dries them out. Right before the sun rises is the best time to see and find earthworms. As a metaphor, the best time to acquire good things, such as a relationship, is early in the morning. The singer prioritizes finding a new relationship as the first thing to seek each day.

Introduction

The song begins with a rooster crowing, cock-a-doodle-doo. Not many songs begin with animal sounds. Roosters crow in the morning as a ritual to signify the beginning of the day, but it is also done to assert dominance and signal social status. Chickens have a pecking order and only the highest ranked rooster is allowed to crow.

What happened?

Verse 1

Oh, I never knew I loved you 'til you left me. Oh, I never knew I cared 'til you were gone. I was young and foolish. I didn't know what I was doin'. I didn't know I'd lost you 'til you're gone.  Oh, I never knew I loved you 'til you were gon

The singer reflects on the role they played in a failed relationship.

In the article, Does My Ex Miss Me? (Hint: Yes, But It's Not Like It Matters), Max Jancar explains there could be several reasons why an ex may miss a partner, but it does not mean that the reasons are good enough for the relationship to stay intact. Often, relationships, even bad ones, fill a void in a person's life. Toxic relationships are a see-saw of ups-and-downs. The fact that the singer didn't know how good he had it until she was gone is a sign of being preoccupied with his own needs and taking his partner for granted.

Now what?

"Early in the Morning" is an inspirational song about learning from past mistakes and moving on. Blaming others for what they did or did not do in a failed relationship delays healing and growth. It takes two people to paddle a boat for it to go anywhere. If only one person paddles, then it's not going anywhere. If the people are paddling in different directions, then the boat is not going anywhere. It is wise to accept people for who they are and not for who we want them to be. It is wise to accept relationships for what they are and not what we want them to be. Not all connections are meant to last. Not all relationships work out.

Chorus

So I gotta get up early in the morning (early in the morning) to find me another lover.
So I gotta get up early in the morning (early in the morning) to find me another lover
So I gotta get up early in the morning (early in the morning) to find me another lover
Gotta get up early in the morning (gotta get up early in the morning)
to find me another lover

Verse 2

Now I gotta get up early every morning
'Cause the early bird always catches the worm
Now I gotta get up every morning
Gotta make up for the lesson I learned
Gotta find me a lover that won't run for cover
Gotta find me a lover that won't run to mother

Now that the singer has reflected on the role they played in the failed relationship, what is the next move?  He is taking the lessons learned from this relationship and find another lover.

Who was she?

Bridge

I was young and foolish, I didn't know what I was doin'
I didn't know what I'd lost 'til you were gone
She had a pretty face that drove men wild
I even wanted her to have my child

She had a pretty face that drove men wild and he even wanted her to have his child. Some people assume that beautiful people with good qualities are guaranteed to have perfect lives which is not true. Since society places high value on beauty, it is easy to understand why that assumption is rampant. Pretty privilege does exist, but it does not guarantee an easy life. Anyone can be taken for granted regardless of their age, looks or income.

How long do you stay and hope for relationships to get better is tricky. Multiple chances may or may not work out for the best in the long run. I have seen both outcomes and it depends on the people involved. However, for the most part, abuse usually gets worst. Yes, you must teach people how to treat you because we have different backgrounds. However, not all students are worth the work because change is an inside job. Some will still try to cheat their way through.  Discernment is crucial.

Outro/Mantra/Everything is Going to Be Alright!

Early in the morning
In the middle of the day, baby
Late at night, mama
Everything's gonna be alright
Early in the morning
In the middle of the day, baby
Late at night, baby
Everything will be alright
Early in the morning, hee
In the middle of the day, baby
Late at night, baby
Everything will be alright
Early in the morning, baby
In the middle of the day, baby
Late at night, mama
Everything will be alright, yeah
Early in the morning, baby
In the middle of the day, baby
Late at night, mama
Everything will be alright

"Early in the Morning" ends with optimism and belief that things will get better. The catchy up-tempo makes the song a popular dance tune. While you are dancing, listen to the lyrics. Understand what the song is reminding you....don't give up on love. Don't give up on finding connections because of past disconnects. Life teaches us the importance of knowing how and when to let go. Be like trees in the fall and let go graciously.  After you let go, open your hands to new beginnings and opportunities. We don't always get to choose whether a relationship lasts for a reason, a season or a lifetime because we cannot control the thoughts and actions of others. The message is for of all types of relationships, including friendships.

Accept our role in the failed relationship and avoid living too long in a loop of blaming others or self-blame. Don't waste time on regrets. Life is a learning experience. When we know better, then we do better! Believe everything is going to be alright!
